Athletes spend the winter chasing qualifying times in order to compete in the championships that begin in a few weeks. But the SCC Coaches Invite is a team scoring event which gives fans of track and field a peek into who some of the best teams in the state might be at the end of the year. Hamden scored 25 points off their relays with wins in the sprint medley (3:39.73) and the 4x400m (3:36.22).

They also had wins from Cameron Saunders in the shot put. The junior had a four-foot PR and broke 50-ft for the first time, landing the shot at 52-05.25. There are now 11 boys over the 50-ft mark, only four less than last year which was a record for most CT throwers over that barrier this century. Senior Liam Buckley-Robinson also set a PR, running 6.61 to claim the win in the 55m. The Dragons totaled 45 points.

Lyman Hall scored 38 points and Xavier finished with 34 to grab the next two spots in the boys competition.

Amity earned 47 points with Naugatuck nipping Conard 34-33 for the runner-up spot. Although the overall places may change somewhat due to a mixup in laps in the final heat of the 4x800m that saw the top finishing teams get DQ’d. Teams have been offered the opportunity to race again in the Hillhouse Varsity Night meet next Friday.

The Spartans took 1st and 2nd places in the 55m hurdles as Isabella Aldi crossed the line in 9:02 in the hurdles just ahead of Macie Slado in 9.29. Teammate Lily Quill cleared 10-ft in the pole vault for the win before bowing out at 11-ft. Amity showed plenty of depth scoring in five other areas in the 32 team meet.

Lauren Kropo continued her dominating season. She retook over the lead in the 55m by running a PR of 7.07 and became the 5th fastest girl all time, setting the meet record in the process. This is setting up a real showdown in the straightaway…
