Another busy weekend for our state athletes as they try to earn or better existing times, marks or heights in order to achieve qualifying standards for the upcoming championship season. Check out our recap of a few noteworthy performances among many from several meets.
Wesleyan Cardinal Qualifier
@ Bacon Fieldhouse, Wesleyan University, Middletown CT
In her first ever 600 meter race Sarah Roberts ran 1:36.41 to break a five-year old Mercy Indoor Track and Field record in the event last Tuesday to qualify for New Balance Nationals in her third event. Roberts, who has already qualified for the National Championship in Boston in the 800 meters and the Distance Medley Relay, broke the previous best of 1:38.88 set by Katie Menard in 2020. The junior’s 600 time is currently #2 in Connecticut, sixth in New England and 24th in the country.
Old Saybrook Indoor Track Qualifier
@ Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven CT
Unlike other states the shuttle hurdle relay is seldom run among CT schools. It is an event that is difficult to set up since athletes go back and forth over 55HH on the straightaway and most tracks don’t have the proper markings. Last weekend, Windsor ran the East Coast Invitational in RI and finished in 31.94 to run the 2nd fastest time in CT history, behind Woodstock Academy’s 15 year old record of 31.71. But on Thursday, CCC rivals Bloomfield swept the top three spots, all under 7.9 with Delante Senior taking the win in 7.62. Juniors Shaun Lazenby (7.84) and Jessie Singleton Jr. (7.88) took the next two places with their fourth hurdler Sergio Rose Jr taking 6th in 9.11. These two schools, only a 10-minute drive from each other separated by I-91 have been longtime friendly rivals and now they are both focusing on this unique event to earn their place in state history and national prominence.
The Windsor hurdlers are coached by assistant coach Lorenzo Milledge whose daughter Catherine was coached by Bloomfield coach Garfield White. It was White who introduced the father and daughter to the hurdles before the family moved to Weaver where she became an All New England hurdler and sprinter. From this experience Lorenzo got his first introduction to coaching hurdles and now the two schools often compete against each other in this event.
