PITTSBURGH – Track & Field’s Je’Nyia Burton and Swimming & Diving’s Sophie Yendell were named PNC Achievers of the Week following a pair of strong performances.
Je’Nyia Burton collected two event wins at the Hokie Invitational this past weekend. Her two wins came in the 200-meter and 300-meter races. The Orlando, Florida, native ran a time of 23.89 and was the only athlete in the field to run under 24 seconds for the win in the 200-meter race. Burton, the current school record holder in the 300-meter (37.66) ran just shy of her best time, 37.67, to notch the win in Blacksburg.
Sophie Yendell won two individual races and had a relay victory as the Pitt women beat SMU and Utah to improve to 7-0 for the first time since the 1985-86 season. The fifth-year senior won the women’s 50 freestyle (21.96) and the 100 butterfly (52.28), almost breaking her own in school record in the 50 freestyle. She also helped the women’s 200 medley relay team take the first race of the day, finishing with a time 1:37.90. Yendell currently holds seven school records.
