Innes Named SEC Field Athlete of the Week Following Record-Setting Performance

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri track and field’s Sam Innes (Columbia, Missori) has been named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

This marks the first conference weekly honor for Innes and the second men’s indoor award in program history. This is also the first men’s recognition for the Tigers since Ja’Mari Ward did so on January 28, 2020.

Innes, a redshirt junior thrower, earned his first career weekly recognition after setting a program record in the weight throw at the Bob Teel Invitational on Saturday, recording a total distance of 22.98m (75-4.75). The previous record was held by Chris Rohr, throwing 22.71m (74-6) in 2009 at the Iowa State Classic.

Innes’ result at the Bob Teel Invitational ranks eighth nationally and third in the conference this season. His personal record broke his previous best by 0.52m, set during MU’s first home meet of the year at the Alexis Jarrett Invitational.

Missouri track and field next returns to Hearnes Center Fieldhouse for a fourth-consecutive home meet on Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1 for the Dr. Rick McGuire Invitational. The meet will be open and free for spectators.
