Thrower Earns Co-Women’s Field Athlete Of The Week Nod

For the second week in a row, a California track & field athlete has been honored by the ACC as redshirt sophomore Giavonna Meeks was named Co-Women’s Field Athlete of the Week Tuesday. Meeks, who took a collegiate lead in the women’s weight throw over the weekend, shares the honor with Virginia Tech’s Julia Fixsen, who achieved the same feat in the women’s pole vault. She joins teammates David Foster (Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Jan. 21) and Valentina Savva (Women’s Freshman of the Week – Jan. 21) as ACC award-winners.

This is the first conference weekly award for Meeks, who was previously named the 2024 SEC Indoor Co-Freshman Field Athlete of the Year while competing for Vanderbilt in 2024. At the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational, she posted three throws over 23 meters – the only collegiate woman to cross that barrier this year – to take the national lead at 23.55m (77-3.25) and move up to No. 2 in program history. Meeks also competed in the shot put over the weekend, posting the fifth-best mark in Cal history with a throw of 15.22m (49-11.25).

Cal track & field will return to action Friday at the New Mexico Team Open and the UW Invitational.
