CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Five Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes from five different institutions were tabbed as the ACC’s Indoor Track & Field Performers of the Week. Louisville’s KJ Byrd won a pair of weekly honors, while student-athletes from Clemson, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Stanford were also recognized.
On his way to being named the ACC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, North Carolina’s Ethan Strand broke the ACC and NCAA records in the one-mile run at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic. The Vestavia, Alabama, native crossed the finish line in 3:48.32, becoming the first collegiate runner to ever post a sub-3:50 time in the mile. Strand’s time is the third-fastest indoor mile time in history by any athlete and the new mark is his second NCAA record of the season after also breaking the 3,000-meter record in December.
Stanford’s Amy Bunnage was named the ACC Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week after a strong showing in the 3,000-meter at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, Massachusetts. The sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, was the top collegiate runner after crossing the line in 8:43.82 – the sixth-fastest collegiate 3,000-meter time in history. Her time ranks first in the ACC and nationally this season.
Louisville’s Byrd took both the ACC Men’s Indoor Field and Freshman of the Week honors after shattering the Louisville freshman record in the heptathlon. In his collegiate heptathlon debut, Byrd totaled 5,746 points and posted the top mark in four of the seven events. The freshman from Connelly Springs, North Carolina, currently leads the ACC in the heptathlon and ranks ninth among all competitors nationally.
Notre Dame’s Jadin O’Brien broke the Notre Dame school record in the pentathlon on her way to earning ACC Women’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. At the DeLoss Dodds Invitational, O’Brien took first place in the event with 4,552 points, winning the 60-meter hurdles, shot put and 800-meter run. The Pewaukee, Wisconsin, native currently leads both the ACC and NCAA in the pentathlon.
