CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. // GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The men’s and women’s track and field teams finished the first day of the UVA Challenge in Virginia and the Tom Jones Invitational in Florida on Friday (April 18). Abria Smith threw the 14th-best shot put in NCAA history today with an 18.92m (62-1) mark on her first throw in her win at the Tom Jones Invite.
Smith shattered her own program record by 1.34 meters (from 17.58m) and improved her overall personal best by 93 centimeters (from 17.99m). Her mark is currently the second best in the nation for the 2025 season and leads the Big Ten.

Tacoria Humphrey earned the silver medal in the long jump invite with a 6.73m (22-1) leap which is the fifth-best mark in the country so far this season and second in the Big Ten. Sophia Beckmon placed sixth on a 6.41m (21-0 1/2) jump which is the 10th-best mark in the nation, third best in the Big Ten.
Asia Thomas clocked a 23.54 in the 200m which slotted her in at sixth place in today’s race. Rafael Raap threw 56.64m (185-10) in the javelin to place 12th.
UVA CHALLENGE
Sam Poglitsch ran the program’s eighth-fastest 3000m steeplechase 10:26.40 in her third-place finish. Will Merrick claimed the silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:54.74 which was 0.3 seconds shy of slotting him in on the program top-10 list.
Halle Hill took fourth place in the invitational section of the 1500m clocking a 4:15.26 time. Kennady Anderson took fifth in the 3000m steeplechase (10:31.63) and Trey Sato ran a 3:50.44 time in the 1500m which placed him eighth in competition.
UP NEXT
The Orange and Blue track and field crews return to action tomorrow for the final day of the Tom Jones Invitational with field events beginning at 8 a.m. and track events at 8:30 a.m. CT.
