Badgers turn in record performances at Penn, Texas


MADISON, Wis.  – Friday was a banner day for the Wisconsin men’s track and field team as Jacob Zednik and Joseph White posted top-three performances in throwing events at the Texas Invitational while UW posted the second-fastest mark in school history in the sprint medley relay and the outdoor distance medley relay at the 129th edition of the Penn Relays

Badgers earn five top-five marks in Texas 

Senior Jacob Zednik won the javelin with a toss of 231 feet, 3 inches (70.50 meters), a mark that is second in school history and only 7 inches shy of the school record of 231-10 (70.66m) set by Robert Dehn in 2009. 

Zednik ranks fifth in the Big Ten Conference and in the top-20 nationally. 

A trio of Badgers threw over 62 feet in the shot put, led by Joseph White who finished second in the event. White launched the shot 64-2 ½ (19.57m), a mark that ranks third in school history and No. 10 in the country. 

Andrew Stone had a season-best toss of 63-0 1/4 (19.22m) to take third while Jason Swarens was fourth with a mark of 62-3 ¾ (18.99m).

Senior Cole Hooper nabbed a top-five finish in the hammer throw with a heave of 205-11 (62.76m)

Badgers earn two No. 2 marks in Philadelphia

At the Penn Relays at Franklin Field, the distance medley relay squad of Liam Newhart, Jalen Williams, Andrew Casey and Adam Spencer took eighth with a time of 9:32.56, the second-best time outdoors in school history.  

Later in the afternoon, the sprint medley relay squad of Gio Wearing, Williams, Casey and Patrick Hilby fought hard, crossing the line with a time of 3:16.69, good for second all-time in the Wisconsin record books. They finished fourth overall in the event. 

Wearing turned in his best legal time of the season in the prelims of the 110 hurdles as the junior finished in 13.53 to win his section. His time was the second-fastest during the afternoon.

Up Next: The Badgers will wrap up action at Penn as UW will compete in the 4xMile while Gio Wearing will race in the finals of the 110 hurdles. Wisconsin will also send athletes to the Illinois Twilight in Champaign, Illinois.
