KPMG Prague Night of PBs: turning people into track fans

June 19 event hopes to produce a wave of 5000m records and personal best performances

KPMG Prague Night of PBs was born when Štěpán Kačena, a 41-year-old amateur miler from Prague, Czechia, joined forces with Jiří Sýkora, Olympian and Czech 5000m record-holder, and his son Jan, also an accomplished runner. The father-son duo had been organising mile and 5km races in their home town of Opava and were gracious enough to provide their organisational know-how to help the new Prague venture off the ground.

Inspiration came from London

The first edition of the 5000m race was held in 2024 at the Spartak Praha 4 track, home to Czechia’s distance star with Scottish roots Moira Stewartová. It was a resounding success in the local athletics community.

Sýkora’s Czech record wasn’t broken that day, but he remains optimistic for the future. “In a way, young runners today have it harder than we did. This race is a way for us to support them and help them break the record on home soil,” says Sýkora.

In 2025, the race is opening to international athletes. It’s design also draws inspiration from abroad: “I knew about London’s Night of the 10,000m PBs and thought it was amazing what the team lead by Ben Pochee was able to build.

Our mission is the same – turn more people into track fans,” explains Kačena. Similarly to London, Prague’s event features fast music, flames on the home straight, beer on tap and kids entertainment. “We open lane four to fans and encourage them to cheer their lungs out.”

Everyone is welcome

The best way to make people enthusiastic about something is to let them try it on their own, which is why the KPMG Prague Night of PBs has races for everyday runners (including children) and elites alike.

Everyone runs the 5000m distance, including a crop of runners from KPMG, the event’s main partner: “KPMG is a company in motion. We have more and more runners in our ranks and among our clients and the KPMG Prague Night od PBs is a wonderful opportunity for them to get together, have some fun and test their limits on the track,” says KPMG Partner Eva Bláhová, who will be among those lacing up on June 19.

Will the Czech 5000m record be broken this year? And what about your 5000m PB? Sign up for this year’s KPMG Prague Night of PBs to find out.
