Cal To Honor Graduating Seniors; Several Meet Records On Watch

The California track & field team will conclude the 2025 regular season with its annual dual meet against rival Stanford this Saturday, hosting the 130th Big Meet at Edwards Stadium. The meet is scheduled to begin with the men’s hammer throw at 9:30 a.m. PT and conclude with the men’s 4x400m relay at 4:20 p.m.

Winners of each event will receive five points for their respective teams, while second place earns three points and third place one point. Last year, Cal’s men posted their highest margin of victory at the Big Meet in 33 years with a score of 114-48. Cal’s women last won in 2023, outscoring Stanford 87-76.

This will be the last collegiate home meet for Cal’s graduating seniors, including Bowerman hopeful and discus world record-holder Mykolas Alekna, who also owns the facility (71.39m/234-2) and meet (71.00m/232-11) records. Each individual will be honored in a short ceremony prior to the 4x400m relays.

In addition to the men’s discus, several other Big Meet records are well within reach for both teams. Sprints standout Johnny Goode will take aim at the men’s 400m record of 46.37, set by Stanford’s Rene Rodriguez in 1994, while school record-holder Garrett MacQuiddy hopes to surpass the 1500m record of 3:39.43 set by Cal’s Thomas Joyce 10 years ago. On the women’s side, the current discus record of 61.18m (200-9), set by Stanford’s Carol Cady in 1984, is within reach for 2024 Olympian Caisa-Marie Lindfors. Stanford’s athletes are also eyeing records set by a pair of Cal Hall of Famers – five-time All-American Alyssa Jones hopes to surpass Sheila Hudson’s 1990 mark of 6.58m (21-7.25), while a pair of 800m stars – 2024 Olympic finalist and two-time NCAA Champion Juliette Whittaker and two-time conference champion Roisin Willis – could challenge Alysia Johnson’s 2007 time of 2:03.43.

The first Big Meet, advertised at the time as the “First Intercollegiate Field Day”, was held in 1893 at the Olympic Club Grounds in San Francisco, where Cal defeated Stanford 91-35. It took another 87 years before a women’s dual…
