Bangor, Maine, home of horror author Stephen King, hosts this year’s 76th New England Interscholastic Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Top six finishers in eac CT State Open event have automatically qualified but in some cases, finishers as far back at 12th are entered due to many athletes deciding not to make the 5-plus hours drive to northern Maine.

Every event will be competitive and Connecticut athletes are all highly ranked, but check out a few who could perform particularly well against the regional competition.

Track Events

Boys 100m

Only .02 seconds separates the top three places, but Darwin Jimenez of  Methuen, MA has run a 10.61 for the fastest time in the region this season. Connecticut’s top two two representatives, Jacob Volkerts of Old Lyme and Achillius White of Windsor ran under almost ideal conditions setting PRs of 10.64 and 10.66 at the State Open. This event will no doubt be fast but it is definitely a toss up for the win.

Girls 100m

Maine will send Makenna Drouin of Lewiston who has the fastest time in New England with her time of 11.89 but the Bay State Meet of Champions winner Sarah Claflin is the top seed at 12.01. Freshman Samiya Eady of Manchester has a bright future in front of her and is the 2nd seed at 12.07 and has an extensive history running in regional and national level meets from middle school so she should be used to the pressure of big meets. 

Boys 200m

State Open champion Jon York of Hall and Mass Meet of Champions winner Christopher Brooks are not entered since York will be running relays for Hall next week at NBNO. That opens up a couple of spots for the next six CT finishers who are all under 22 seconds and are ranked in the top seven. But the Bay State’s 2nd place finisher Alex Landry of Acton-Boxborough Region, who entered but did not compete in last year’s New Englands, is the top seed.

Girls 200m

After several State Open runner-up finishes, Old Saybrook’s Avery Rueckert finally won her first Open title and she had to reach deep for her ultimate performance, breaking 25-seconds for the first time. The senior who will attend University of North Carolina Wilmington next year should be challenged by MA Meet of Champions winner Jayani Santos of Tewksbury. If either senior…
