Meet Records

Many of the top track and field athletes in Connecticut competed last weekend at the Yale Invitational, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be some exciting action at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven this Saturday. We will also see a mid season team competition so we might get an idea which teams just might compete for some of the championships in the coming weeks. This rather large meet is split with the boys events taking place in the morning with a 9:00 am start and the girls events expected to begin at 3:00 pm. Let’s take a look at a few of the featured events of this meet that started in 2003.

Boys 4x800m

Cromwell is fresh off two new school records from the Yale Invitational. Dylan Bathrick won the 1000m in 2:32.02 and his teammate Nassyr Andrade broke his 600m school record to take 2nd at Yale from one of the slower heats. They will be joined by brothers Patrick and Colin Monahan who were also part of the 2nd place Yale DMR. A New Balance National qualifier is a real possibility and their school record of 8:40 is sure to go down.

Boys 1000m

This race could really make some changes to the state rankings. Thomas Conklin of Lyman Hall was the State Open champion last year in the 600m indoors and 800m outdoors will be going a little bit outside his comfort zone, moving up to the five lap race. He will have plenty of company to keep the pace honest as Hamden’s Alexander Medina, 5th at last year’s State Open is the second seed. Luke Cushing, 2nd at the State Open in cross country is better known as a 1600m/ 3200m runner but will be moving down in distance and could pull off a small upset. Fareed Abu Rabia took last winter off but showed great potential as a sophomore, running on three of Hall’s State Open relays. But don’t overlook junior Landon Wall of Brookfield who is quietly putting up some solid times and might be a name to watch over the next couple of years.

Boys 1600m SMR

With 13 heats of the 600m, five of the mile plus the hurdles and dash finals, there will be plenty of recovery time between the 1000m and the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay (200-200-400-800). Both Hamden and Lyman Hall have solid sprinters who know how to pass the baton and the teams will anchor with Medina and Conklin who are sure to do battle in the 1000m. The pair of foursomes could very…
