BOULDER- Last week the men’s and women’s cross country teams ended their seasons on high notes at the 2021 NCAA Championships in Tallahassee, Fla. on Saturday. Also on Saturday, football played its last home game of the season and came out on the winning end. These performances earned cross country’s Abby Nichols and Eduardo Herrera as well as football’s Carson Wells the honors of CU Athletes of the Week presented by Arrow.
CU women’s cross country finished in fourth place at the championships. They were led by Nichols who finished eighth overall with a 6-kilometer time of 19:37.6. This performance earned her a second straight All-America honor in the event. The senior managed to just edge a pair of runners who both recorded a time of 19:37.7. This is the fourth time this season that Nichols has led the Buffs. It was also her highest finish at the championships, improving from 18th in 2020 and 41st in 2019.
The men’s cross country team finished in eighth place at the championships. Herrera led the Buffs, finishing 24th overall in the 10-kilometer race with a time of 29:22.0. The senior earned his second All-America honor. This was his best finish in his five championship appearances, improving from his 107th place finish in 2020.
CU football saw a monster game from Wells in his final game at Folsom Field (he has decided not to return for an extra year). In the Buffs 20-17 win over Washington he was in on eight tackles (six solo, including two quarterback sacks, and an additional tackle for loss), a forced fumble, four quarterback hurries and three third down stops. His biggest play was a fourth down stop where he broke up a pass to end a possible UW game-tying/winning drive in the final minute.
While the cross country season has come to an end, football has one more game this Friday against the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City, Utah. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. MT.
