Big Ten Announces Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships Honors




The Big Ten Conference announced the 2022 Big Ten Men’s & Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships award winners on Wednesday, as selected by the conference’s head coaches. The championship meet was held last weekend at the University of Minnesota Track & Field Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Michigan State’s Jenna Magness was selected as the Women’s Track Athlete of the Championships, while Ohio State’s Alexus Pyles was selected as Field Athlete of the Championships and Buckeyes head coach Karen Dennis was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Ohio State’s Eric Harrison Jr. earned Men’s Track Athlete of the Championships accolades, while Nebraska’s Maxwell Otterdahl was selected as Field Athlete of the Championships and Dennis was tabbed the Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Magness claimed Track Athlete of the Outdoor Championships honor after defending her title in the 5,000 meters (16:17.88) and winning the 10,000 meters (33:37.17). Pyles was named the Field Athlete of the Outdoor Championships after winning the heptathlon with 5,623 points. Dennis earned her fourth career Coach of the Year honor after guiding Ohio State to its fourth women’s outdoor championship.

Harrison received his second consecutive Track Athlete of the Indoor Championships award after successfully defending his title in the 100 meters (10.02) and captured the 200 meter championship (20.12). Harrison was also part of the winning 4x100m relay team (39.12) with teammates Praise Olatoke, Kainnan Ramsey and Tyler Johnson. Otterdahl claimed the discus title with a winning throw of 58.19 meters and the shot put title with a distance of 19.71 meters. Dennis earned her second career men’s Coach of the Year honors and became the first coach to sweep the outdoor Coach of the Year honors in Big Ten history. Dennis led the Buckeyes to their sixth outdoor men’s title.

The Big Ten Conference office recognizes one student from each team as Sportsmanship Award Honorees. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
