Cockerill and Ufearo earn Big Ten Post-Graduate scholarships

MADISON, Wis. – Two senior student-athletes from the University of Wisconsin have earned Big Ten Conference Graduate Scholarships. Tessa Cockerill from lightweight rowing and Dan Ufearo from men’s track and field will each receive $7,500 scholarships to continue their educations.

Two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program are awarded the scholarships, based primarily on academic achievements.

Each institution develops its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarships. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.

A native of Lakeville, Minnesota, Cockerill is a 2021 Pocock All-American, spending most of the last two seasons in the Badgers’ top boat, the lightweight varsity eight. The boat finished sixth at the 2022 IRA National Championships on June 5 in West Windsor, New Jersey.

A 2022 Wisconsin graduate in rehabilitation psychology with a certificate in promoting activity for diverse abilities, the two-time Academic All-Big Ten rower heads to Tufts University in Boston to pursue a doctorate in occupational therapy.

Ufearo is one of the Badgers’ top throwers, ranking in the top 10 in the weight throw and hammer throw.  He competed in five Big Ten Championships and is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

A native of Sartell, Minnesota, Ufearo graduated in May with a degree in biochemistry as well as a certificate in global health. He will be attending medical school at New York Medical College this fall.
