'Cuse APR Shows Strong Academic Success

Syracuse University student-athletes are succeeding in the classroom. Syracuse’s 2020-21 APR score is 983, marking the 10th consecutive year Syracuse Athletics scored higher than a 982 in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) program. Six Orange teams achieved a perfect multi-year rate, while eight recorded a perfect single-year score. Syracuse has had at least five teams with a perfect multi-year score in the last four years. The APR began in 2006.

“The Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a team-based metric accounting for the retention and eligibility of current student-athletes,” said Syracuse University Assistant Provost Tommy Powell. “The sustained APR success once again proves that the student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and staff of Syracuse University are working together to provide world-class education and athletic experiences.”

Syracuse’s men’s cross country, men’s track & field, women’s ice hockey, softball, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams all posted perfect 1,000 APR multi-year scores, marking the fourth year in a row that at least five Orange teams have recorded perfect multi-year scores. Women’s soccer has posted a perfect multi-year score in each of the last five years, while men’s cross country, men’s track & field and volleyball have achieved a perfect multi-year score in each of the last three years.

In addition to the multi-year average, the NCAA tracks one-year scores for every team. In 2020-21, eight Syracuse teams had a perfect one-year scores, including men’s cross country, men’s soccer, men’s track & field, women’s cross country, women’s ice hockey, softball, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball.

The APR score follows individual student and total program progression at each Division I institution, tracking student-athletes by assigning points for each semester they remain eligible and for staying enrolled or graduating.

Every Syracuse team surpassed the minimum standard of 930 (a perfect score is 1,000). The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.
