2022 Diamond League Diary, Mondo Duplantis talks pole vault in Lausanne

Mondo Duplantis ended the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on July 24, 2022, with a new World record of 6.22m! What a jump.

Mondo Duplantis ended the European Championships on August 21, 2022, in Munich, Germany, with a new championship record of 6.06 meters; with rainy weather making it dangerous to compete for higher heights, Mondo knew that it would be less than prudent to attempt higher jumps.

On August 25, 2022, in the city center of Lausanne, Switzerland, overlooking Lake Geneva, Mondo Duplantis, to the delight of the large crowd, cleared 6.10 meters, a new meet record on a glorious day.

The following is a series of quotes that Mondo gave to the media after his stellar performance.

Q. What did you think about jumping in Lausanne?

Mondo: “It was wonderful to jump here. There were a lot of kids. It is the next generation we hope to inspire. Both the square of last year and the lake today are very good spots. In Lausanne, there is no bad spot to pick; it is such a beautiful city. City events have a better type of energy. There is more interaction for us and the fans. The spectators also have a better appreciation of how amazing the pole vault actually is. It’s the most ecstatic event in track and field.”

Q. Your thoughts on the performance today?

Mondo: “Today’s performance was good. I maximized what was capable of today. After 6m10, I was pretty tired. I wished I could have made it on the first attempt. Now I need to get back to training because I have started to lose my stamina a little bit. Over 6m, the tiny little things can make you miss the bar. Even after so many times, it still feels quite amazing to clear 6m, especially in the third attempt. Third attempts are always more exciting.”

“In 2022, I have done everything I wanted to do, and I am really grateful for that. I don’t take that for granted. I love jumping and showing people what I am capable of. And hanging out with the guys is always fun.”

Q. You spoke to Sergey Bubka; what did he have to say?

Mondo: “Sergey Bubka told me that I do great things for the sport, to keep going and trying to reach higher heights. It’s cool to hear that from a legend.”
