ANN ARBOR, Mich – Michigan State cross country is set to compete in its second meet of the season at Friday’s Big Ten Preview in Ann Arbor. The meet will take place at the University of Michigan Golf Course, site of the 2022 Big Ten Cross Country Championships.

The men’s cross country team will compete in the 6,000-meter run, slated for 10:15 a.m. The women’s team will take the week off before picking back up at next week’s Spartan Invitational.

Seven Spartans are entered in Friday’s meet, each making their first appearance of the season. Graduate student John Petruno, who capped off his 2022 outdoor track season with an All-American finish in the 1500 at the NCAA Championships, highlights the start list for the Spartans, while 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championship participants Abdi-Fetah Ahmed, Andrew Nolan, and Fraser Wilson are also set to toe the start line. Junior Alexander Penski and sophomore Drew Seabase round out the Spartans’ entries, while graduate transfer and 10-time Division II All-American CarLee Stimpfel (Saginaw Valley State) will compete unattached.

Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Rutgers are entered alongside Michigan State in Friday’s race. The Spartans entered the season ranked 28th in the USTFCCCA Division I National Coaches’ Poll. Michigan earned a 29th-place ranking and Minnesota received 14 votes.

“We look forward to our men getting started on their road to the championship portion of our season. We’ll focus on work back at home in East Lansing with the remainder of the men’s roster as well as our women’s team,” said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Lisa Breznau

Michigan State returns to action at the annual Spartan Invitational, held at Forest Akers East Golf Course, on Friday, Sept. 16. The women’s 6k begins at 11 a.m., with the men’s 8k to follow at 11:40 a.m.
