Sami Destroys School Record In Season Opener

USAFA — Colorado track and field senior Gya’ni Sami kicked off the 2022-23 indoor season on the highest of notes, destroying the Colorado school record in the women’s weight throw by nearly a foot and a half.

Sami won the women’s weight throw at the Air Force Holiday Open here Friday with a toss of 19.56 meters (64-2.25). The mark was a two-and-a-half foot personal best, with Sami’s previous best at 61-8.25. She shattered the CU record set by Cortney Hutmacher back in 2006 of 62-8.5, beating it by more than a foot.

The CU women picked up three total wins in the first day of the season with Avery McMullen winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.49 seconds while Allie Routledge won the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.76 meters (5-9.25). McMullen has an exceptional day, picking up the second-place finish in the open 60 meter dash at 7.65 and placing second in the high jump in 1.65 meters (5-5). Routledge’s mark ties her for ninth in CU history in the high jump.

Also for the CU women, Kara Lucyk finished third in the long jump in 5.86 meters (19-2.75). Her mark is good for 10th in CU history.

On the men’s side, Noah Bouchard and Tyler Sconce opened the season with individual wins. Bouchard cleared 2.08 meters (6-9.75) in the high jump to take the victory. Sconce won the men’s weight throw with a toss of 18.99 meters (62-3.75).

The distance squad competes tomorrow with Charlie Sweeney, India Johnson and Ella Baran competing in the 5,000-meter dash in Boston.
