Track & Field Opens Season at GVSU Holiday Open


ALLENDALE, Mich. – Michigan State track & field opens the 2022-23 indoor track & field season on Friday, December 9 at the GVSU Holiday Open in Allendale, Michigan.  

The Spartans will compete in the field and sprint events, beginning at 3 p.m. at Grand Valley State’s Kelly Family Sports Center. MSU posts entries in the 60, 200 and 400-meter dashes, as well as the 60-meter hurdles, and high jump, pole vault, long jump, shot put and weight throw on the field side.  

2022 NCAA Indoor Championships qualifier Trevor Stephenson will make his season debut in the pole vault and weight throw. 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifier Ryan Talbot will join Stephenson in the pole vault, while also competing in the 60 hurdles and shot put. Fellow multi-event athlete and NCAA qualifier Heath Baldwin will also compete in the 60 hurdles, shot put and weight throw. NCAA East Preliminary qualifiers Terrence Muex and Noah Sage will compete in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash, respectively.  

Top returners on the women’s side include multi-event athlete Olivia Lopez, who will compete in the long jump. Graduate sprinters Shakira Dancy and Nala Barlow will run the 400-meter dash, while senior Amani Nuels will compete in the 60-meter dash. 

Several Spartans will make their debut in the Green and White, including Melissa Avi, Anyssa Hall, Sophia Mettes, Korin Whitcomb, and Natalie Blake on the women’s side, and Ian Thompson, Regan Lawrence, Brady Schultz and Colby Morlock on the men’s side.

Michigan State continues the season in the new year at the Michigan Invitational on January 14 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
