Spartans Impress in Indoor Season Opener


ALLENDALE, Mich. – Michigan State track & field opened the 2022-23 indoor season Friday at the GVSU Holiday Open, posting five first-place event finishes and several top performances at the Kelly Family Sports Center. 

SPRINTS/HURDLES 

Graduate student Nala Barlow led the Spartan sprinters on the women’s side, setting a personal best in the 400-meter dash (56.02) for the win. MSU posted two more sub-60 performances behind Barlow, as graduate student Shakira Dancy placed sixth in 58.13 and junior Lexy Alston ran 59.21 for 13th place. Senior Amani Nuels qualified for the finals of the 60m in fourth place and placed fifth in the final with a time of 7.60. 

On the men’s side, the Spartans posted a pair of first-place finishes, as senior Antonio Postell set a personal best in the 60m (6.78) for the win, while sophomore Noah Sage ran 47.01 to take first in the 400m. Junior Logan Allen joined Postell in the 60m finals, placing seventh in 6.90. Sophomore Terrance Muex finished fourth as the Spartans’ lone entrant in the 200m in 21.71. Senior Heath Baldwin placed sixth in the 60m hurdles final in 8.19. 

THROWS 

Sophomore duo Valadian Pallett and Janan Khalil had strong showings for MSU in the women’s throwing events, with Pallett posting personal bests in the invitational sections of the weight throw (19.06m, third) and shot put (14.17m). Pallet set personal bests in both events. Khalil competed in her first meet as a Spartan, taking first in the unseeded section of the weight throw with a 16.64m toss. 

Freshman Colby Morlock impressed in his Spartan debut, taking runner-up honors in the invitational section of the shot put (16.48m) and fifth in the invitational section of the weight throw (17.40m). Senior Joshua Devries notched fourth ahead of Morlock in the weight throw (17.66m), while sophomore Brendan Vander Meer placed seventh with a throw of 16.87m.  

JUMPS 

A pair of freshmen grabbed wins in two jumping events for MSU, as freshman Sophia Mettes won the pole vault with a 4.10m jump and Korin Whitcomb won the high jump with a 1.65m clearance. Junior Elizabeth Knoll tied for second in the high jump, clearing 1.60m, and freshman Natalie Blake placed fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.65m.
