Men's DMR Team Wins ACC Weekly Honors


GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Atlantic Coast Conference record-setting performances by the North Carolina men’s distance medley relay team and Virginia Tech’s Rebecca Mammel highlight the league’s final weekly indoor honors of the 2022-23 season.

Notre Dame’s Michael Shoaf and the NC State women’s DMR team also turned in nationally ranked performances to earn weekly recognition as their teams geared up for this week’s ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held this Thursday through Saturday at Louisville’s Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.

ACC Men’s Track Performers of the Week

North Carolina’s Distance Medley Relay Team


At the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame, the UNC men’s 4000m distance relay team of Jesse Hunt, Jared Williams, Kyle Reinheimer and Ethan Strand set an ACC and program record while tying for first place with Wisconsin in a time of 9:19.99. The Tar Heels won the first heat and Wisconsin won the second in the same time, leading to the first-place tie. That time is tied for third in the NCAA so far this season. The Tar Heels are tied for the fourth-fastest program in the nation in the event indoors this season (all conditions, tracks and sizes). 

 

ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week

Rebecca Mammel, Virginia Tech


After setting the ACC Championship record last winter, Mammel broke the ACC overall record on Friday during day one of the Virginia Tech Challenge. On her final attempt of the day, Mammel launched the weight 77- 8.75 (23.96m), overthrowing the previous record of 76-5.75 (23.31m) set by Rachel Tanczos of Notre Dame in 2020. 

 

ACC Women’s Track Performers of the Week

NC State Distance Medley Relay Team


The NC State foursome of Savannah Shaw, Timara Chapman, Sam Bush and Katelyn Tuohy took first place in the women’s distance medley at the JDL DMR Invite with a time of 10:55.49, setting a new school and facility record for the event. Their converted time of 10:48.55 sits at number two on the women’s NCAA indoor qualifying list. 

 

ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Week

Michael Shoaf, Notre Dame


Shoaf placed first in the shot put and broke the school record with his throw of 65-9.5 (20.05 meters) at the Alex Wilson Invitational. Shoaf will enter the ACC Championships ranked 10th nationally.
