South Carolina Cruising in the Bahamas on Day One of Island Relays – University of South Carolina Athletics

FREEPORT, Bahamas (March 17, 2023) – South Carolina Track & Field opened the outdoor season in style on Friday, competing in the first day of the Island Relays Bahamas in Freeport, Bahamas. The women’s team is currently sitting in second with 55 points, while the men are positioned fourth overall with 30 points.

The Gamecock women earned a pair of wins on the opening day, doing so in both the 200 meter and the 800 meter. Jayla Jamison, the local product accustomed to winning, started off the outdoor season with a bang in the women’s 200m after running 23.28 to capture 10 points for the Gamecocks. Newcomer, Sylvia Chelangat, secured her first victory in a Gamecock uniform, running the second fastest 800m time in outdoor program history with a time of 2:05.99 for 10 more points for Carolina.

The Gamecock women scored points in all five finals events today, collecting 17 points alone in the 400m. Jahnile Registre and Aalliyah Francis battled back-and-forth for second and third, both setting new personal bests. Registre secured silver with a time of 53.28, while Francis captured bronze after running 53.29.

Elena Kelety made her outdoor Gamecock debut with a bronze finish in the women’s 400-meter hurdles following a time of 58.19.

EJ Richardson highlighted the men’s team with 10 points in the men’s 400m. The veteran sprinter ran a new outdoor 400m PR of 47.01 for the first outdoor victory this season for the Gamecocks.

Anthony Greenhow, Jr. also placed first in the 100m prelims after he blazed the track with a new personal best of 10.60 to qualify for Saturday’s finale. DJ Black will join him in the 100m finals after he finished fifth in the prelims with a qualifying time of 10.72.

The Gamecocks racked up the points in the men’s 800m, led by Aidan Hatton with a runner-up finish of 1:54.32 for eight points. Jack Mensch finished in fourth following a time of 1:55.18, while Will Wright set a personal best in his first outdoor 800m with a time of 1:55.81.

South Carolina will conclude the 2023 Island Relays Bahamas tomorrow in Freeport with the first track event starting at 9 a.m. and the first field event beginning at 10 a.m.
