The second part of the twin bill of meets on Wednesday at Veterans Stadium in Willowbrook Park in New Britain the CIAC Class L Outdoor Track and Field Championships featured a return to the top of the standings by the Windsor girls and the Xavier boys teams.

After winning their third Class MM title last year the Windsor girls team returned to Class L to win their ninth title by a resounding margin with 105 points over defending champion EO Smith with 75 points as New Canaan finished third with 71 pts and Hall in fourth with 52 points.

It’s been awhile since the Xavier boys team claimed their Class LL title in 1998 but they did so in resounding fashion on Wednesday night in the Class L meet scoring 116 points to easily outdistance their competition that included a runner-up finish by Hillhouse with 68 points and third place Amity with 65 points as 23 of the 25 teams earned points.

Highlights from the Girls Class L Championship

The Windsor girls march to their ninth Class L title was powered by their sprinters as they took 13 places in five events 400m or less led by Victoria Francis sweep of the 400m (57.60) and 200m (25.23) titles. Francis returned for an encore in the 4x400m where she was joined by Brittani Westberry, Tahjae Daley and Kareema McKenzie as they set a meet record of 3:52.77 that blew away their previous meet record of 3:54.33 set in 2010. Their mark places them as the top seed for the State Open on Monday. 

Windsor first place medals were earned by their 4x100m relay team of Saniah Penns, Alana Martin, Destiny Ross-Bates, and Jaida Murray as they sped to a time of 48.90.

Kareema McKenzie followed with her own gold medal effort in the 300m hurdles winning in her PR time of 43.70 that followed her PR time of 14.89 as she finished the 100m hurdles finals behind Jill Roberts of Wilton in her winning time of 14.74.

No one was more surprised by frosh Kara Kahn’s 17-foot improvement in the discus throw than Kahn herself as she earned a silver medal with a mark of 113-1 behind senior Gabriela DeFelice of New Canaan with her toss of 128-9.

The track events started with a victory in the 4x800m as the defending champion EO Smith team of Alexis Buskey, Navia Casa, Jordan Stygar and Gabriella Hernandez combined for a winning time of 9:31. They were followed by season best times from Hall in 9:36.19 and New Canaan in 9:38.55.
