Barrowford again hosts fast 5km plus news of the Tynedale Jelly 10 in our UK race round-up
PODIUM NEW BALANCE 5km RACES, Barrowford, Lancashire, August 19
Fresh from a 3:37.20 1500m PB in Belgium the previous weekend, James Gormley had a clear victory in the elite race with a 13:49 clocking in his first race over the distance in five years, Martin Duff reports.
It was also comfortably a PB, as British 5000m champion James West was left 13 seconds down but clear of third placed Fintan Stewart. Gormley had endured a disappointing UK Championship in July after returning from a couple of years in the United States, before bouncing back to take the 3000m in the BMC Nike Grand Prix final in 7:49.61.
Calli Thackery set her 5km PB over this Barrowford course a year ago but this year after a DNF in the UK 5000m track championships took the Home Countries road 5km in Cardiff in 15:29. Here the Hallamshire Harrier came out on top of the women’s standings with 15:36, ahead of Asics’ Cristina Fernandez’ 15:44.
Behind, Hannah Nuttall was also inside the 16-minute mark with a 15:44 personal best, which followed her 15:29.49 for second spot in the European team championship 5000m, at the end of June.
Race two had earlier seen Eleanor Curran take the women’s section in a PB 16:26 ahead of Holly Weedall, who was just outside her best with 16:33.
