BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama cross country earned a pair of Southeastern Conference yearly awards, the league office announced Tuesday. In addition to the conference awards, the USTFCCCA announced its All-Region list where the Crimson Tide put up six student-athletes.
Victor Kiprop was voted the SEC Cross Country Runner of the Year for the second season in a row, while freshman phenom Doris Lemngole earned SEC Freshman of the Year accolades. It’s now the third straight year that the Crimson Tide has been awarded men’s Runner of the Year, and the second consecutive season that Alabama has produced a women’s Freshman of the Year honoree.
Victor Kiprop – Men’s SEC Runner of the Year
- Secured back-to-back first-place finishes at the Crimson Classic and SEC Championships
- Defended his SEC individual title in the men’s 8K race
- Finished second at the NCAA South Regional Championships, only three seconds behind teammate Hillary Cheruiyot
- Since 2021, an Alabama student-athlete has been named the men’s SEC Runner of the Year
- Overall, the Tide has earned the accolade 10 times, including six of the last nine
Doris Lemngole – Women’s SEC Freshman of the Year
- Making her collegiate debut this season, Lemngole has finished in the top two in all five of her races this season
- In her first two meets, Lemngole captured the individual title
- She’s garnered four weekly honors over the course of the 2023 regular season
- USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week (Oct. 2)
- SEC Women’s Runner of the Week (Oct. 3)
- SEC Women’s Freshman of the Week (Sept. 19, Oct. 17)
- The rookie is the fourth member of the UA women’s program to earn SEC Freshman of the Year, and the second in as many years
- 1998 – Ashley LaBudde | 1999 – Dawn Boggs | 2022 – Hilda Olemomoi
USTFCCCA All-South Region Accolades
- In addition to the SEC honors, Alabama saw six student-athletes earn USTFCCCA All-South Region accolades, three women and three men
- On the women’s side, Joy Gill, Hilda Olemomoi and Lemngole earned the honor
- The men’s trio includes Hillary Cheruiyot, Eliud Kipsang and Kiprop
