Five things to know: Badgers host Wisconsin Midwest Invitational in Chicago

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s track and field team hosts the Windy City Classic in Chicago on Saturday. The team will send select sprinters, hurdlers and throwers to compete against Purdue, Milwaukee, DePaul and Southern Illinois. Throwing events begin at 11:45 a.m. CT.

1. OUT WITH THE OLD: 2023 ended on an exciting note as Wisconsin competed in two meets to begin the season. Jackson Sharp and Bob Liking made history in Boston at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener (Dec. 2). Sharp crushed the school 5,000 meters record with a time of 13 minutes, 25.1 seconds while Liking moved to second on the all-time 5,000 meters list. The Badgers took three events at the Jimmy Grant Invite (Dec. 9). Justin Kiefel won the triple-jump while Ben Nibbelink won the 3,000 meters and Andrew Casey took the mile in his collegiate debut.

2. IN WITH THE NEW: The new year marks the season debut for UW’s throwers. Redshirt senior Andrew Stone – an indoor All-American honorable mention in 2022 – leads an experienced group of six upperclassmen, including shot put record holder Jason Swarens, who earned second-team All-America honors in the shot last outdoor season.

3. BACK IN THE WINDY CITY: The Badgers will host two events in Chicago this winter. Saturday’s Invitational is followed by the Windy City Invite on Feb. 9. It is the third-consecutive season Wisconsin has hosted two events in Chicago.
