Heptathletes and sprints star in Day 1 of Michigan Invitational


MADISON, Wis. – The UW men’s track and field team saw heptathletes and sprints star on Day 1 of the Michigan Invitational Friday. The Badgers competed against select athletes from Michigan, Notre Dame, Toledo, Indiana State and Eastern Michigan, among others.

Cade Amborn started the heptathlon off hot, finishing third in the 60-meter sprint at 7.18. He went on to win the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 7 ¼ inches and finish second in the high jump with a measurement of 6 feet, 5 inches, en route to a first-place overall finish on the day. Amborn has 3118 points.

Sophomore Lucas Heyroth finished second in the overall standings today after taking second place in the 60-meter, long jump and shot put events. The Lodi native finished his day with a total of 2900 points.

Finally, grad student Quinn Lansill finished fourth after finishing fourth in the long jump, high jump and shot put. He finished with 2638 points.

On the sprints side, sophomore Jalen Williams stood out with his victory in the 600 meters at 1:20.14. Junior Sam Amusan was also impressive as he qualified for the 60-meter final after running a 6.88 in the preliminaries. 

Three Badgers finished in the top 10 in the weight throw, headlined by Jacob Bugella’s fourth-place finish and 66 feet, 1 3/4 inches (20.16m) heave. Cole Hooper finished in sixth with a toss of 65 feet (19.81m), while Jason Swarens placed seventh with his throw of 64 feet, 7 1/4 inches (19.69m). 

Justin Kiefel placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 2 ¼ inches, (6.76m). 

Up Next:

The Badgers resume action tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the heptathlon 60-meter hurdle. Wisconsin will also compete in the triple jump, shot put, 60 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 3000 meters and 4×400 relay.
