McDonald and Sharp earn top-three finishes at Australian Athletics Championships

ADELAIDE, Australia — A pair of Badgers shined on the big stage at the Australian Athletics Championships on Sunday as former Wisconsin men’s track and field standout Morgan McDonald placed second in the 5000 meters and UW senior Jackson Sharp took third.

An Olympian in the 5000 meters in 2021, McDonald clocked in at 13 minutes, 39.66 seconds, while Sharp was close behind in 13:39.82. Matthew Ramsden took home the title in 13:39.61.

McDonald was toward the front of the pack for the entirety of the race. However, Sharp found himself in the middle of the pack until the midway point of the 12.5-lap race, where he made a move to the outside and surged to the front of the lead pack.

McDonald and Sharp battled several other athletes in the final laps before Ramsden barely beat McDonald, a four-time NCAA champion at Wisconsin, and Sharp, the 2023 Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year.
