Badgers set school record at Penn Relays


MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s track and field team had a record-breaking day on Saturday as they concluded their three-day road trip, competing at The Penn Relays in Philadelphia and the Texas Invitational in Austin.

It was a historic day at the 128th running of the Penn Relays as the quartet of Leane Willemse, Victoria Heiligenthal, Maya Rayle, and Maddison Mooney broke the school record in the 4×1500 on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field.

The group finished fourth overall, crossing in 17:14.75, breaking Pam Hinton, Mary Hartzheim, Maureen Hartzheim, and Suzy Favor’s previous record of 17:22.72 set in 1990.

Graduate student Oliva Roberts kicked the day off in Texas with a third-place finish in the hammer throw. Roberts’s best throw came in the first round when she threw for 206 feet, 7 inches (62.96m). Chikere Oduocha and Abby Peeler secured back-to-back finishes coming in ninth and 10th, respectively. Oduocha threw for a distance of 166-2 (50.66m), while Peeler’s best mark was 165-5 (50.43m). Danni Langseth was back competing in the shot put, finishing fifth with a mark of 51-4 ¼ (15.65m). 

Freshman Elissa Perkins continued her stellar season, setting yet another personal best in the triple jump. The Bolingbrook, Illinois native saw her best jump in the final round, going a distance of 40-6 3/4 (12.36m). 

On the track, Shaina Zinter ran a wind-aided time of 13.95 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, earning a fourth-place finish in the second heat and 12th overall. Kiley Robbins ran a new personal best wind-aided time in the 100-meter dash, crossing in 11.26 seconds, finishing second in her heat and seventh overall. Robbins ranks 25th in the country in the event. 

Up Next

Wisconsin hosts the Badger Challenge at the McClimon Track Complex on Friday, May 3, the final event before the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Field events begin at 1 p.m., and running events start at 3:30 p.m. The Badgers will recognize their graduating seniors at the meet.
