Competitors in the Middletown Track & Field Varsity Invitational on Saturday at Middletown HS responded to the near perfect temperatures and dry surfaces unseen in the previous weeks to achieve meet records, personal and season best performances. Like the Freshman & Sophomore Invite held on Friday, several meet records were set, but this time all were in the girls events.

Girls Varsity Event Highlights

It only took to the second event of the meet for a record performance as Bloomfield’s 4x100m quartet of Nacquelia Fletcher, Saphyr Brown, Dream Wilson and Sianna Lloyd blazed to a 47.84 to out pace rival Windsor who finished second in 49.49. Windsor had held the meet record of 48.02 set in 2019.

The spectators were treated to the CT #2-3-4 times in the 100m hurdle finals as Bloomfield’s D’Asia Duncan edged Windsor’s Kareema McKenzie by a 14:25 to 14:28 margin for the win while Cheshire’s Squirrel Lanz sped to her PR of 14.67 for third place. Duncan’s PR performance reset the meet record of 14.44 set by Simbury’s Vickie Milledge in 2017.

The pole vault provided a third record performance as Barlow’s Jordan Carr cleared 12-6 for the second time this season. Her winning height was an inch better than the meet record set by Megan Biscoglio in 2018. Close behind at 12-0 was Bethel’s Talia Graham who added a CT #1 time of 12.18 to win the 100m final. Carr and Graham are the only vaulters to have cleared 12-6 this season.

Windsor’s Kareema McKenzie returned to win the 300m hurdles in 42.82, a hundredth of a second slower than her CT State record performance last week but almost 2-seconds faster than her meet record set last year. The next two finishers recorded their PRs and CT #2-3 times this season as Bloomfield’s Duncan placed second in 43.97 while Cheshire’s Lanz was third in 44.45.

The sprints continued to provide another CT #1 time this season as Manchester’s Samiya Eady sped to a season best of 25.07. The sophomore edged Windsor’s McKenzie with her CT#3 time of 25.30.

The field events saw Lauren Smith of New Canaan win the discus (121-2) while Aleisha Clarke of Hartford Public scored a first place in the javelin with her PR throw of 117-2.

The jumps featured a win by EO Smith’s Avery Pitts with a height of 5-6 that equalled her CT #1 mark from earlier in the week. Conard’s Lizzy Bidwell leaped 36-4 to move to a CT #2 this season.
