Araya, Griffith Tabbed To SEC Community Service Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference announced Thursday afternoon that Msgana Araya and Rasheeme Griffith were selected to represent Tennessee on the 2024 SEC Track & Field Community Service Team.

The conference names a Community Service Team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his or her community through superior service efforts.

Over the course of her four-year career as a member of the Tennessee track & field and cross country teams, Araya has accumulated more than 200 hours of community service. At least 113 of her service hours were spent volunteering in Child Life Services at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital – visiting patients and providing entertainment and games. Araya also dedicated time to local youth at Sevier Heights Baptist Church and Lonsdale Elementary School, serving the kindergarten class at SHBC and assisting with PE classes at Lonsdale. The Lady Vol senior also participated in numerous UT athletic department service initiatives, including the community holiday meal and Read To Lead.

In his fifth year with the Vols, Griffith has logged more than 30 hours of community service during his time on Rocky Top. The Bridgetown, Barbados, native was a member of the VOLeaders Academy that traveled to Rwanda during the summer of 2022 for a cultural immersion service trip. Griffith worked with multiple organizations and nonprofits that work to provide health and wellness resources to women and children, empower women to lead in their communities and provide access to sport to rural youth – including Shooting Touch, Together in Sport, Girls Space and Conservation Heritage.
