Roma 2024 Breaking News: Katerina Johnson-Thompson withdraws, after three events, from the Heptathlon

Gold for KJT! - runblogrun

Katerina Johnson-Thompson has withdrawn from the European Athletics Heptathlon. Katerina had competed well in the 100m hurdles and high jump and then faltered in the shot put. Just before the 200 meters, KJT withdrew, and Stuart Weir sent us the following official update from European Athletics.

Katerina Johnson-Thompson is the current World Champion (she won gold in Doha 2019 and Budapest 2023), two golds at European Indoors  (Prague 2015 and Glasgow 2019-pentathlon), Gold and Silver at World Indoors (pentathlon), gold in 2018 Birmingham, silver in 2014 Sopot, plus two golds in Commonwealth Games (2018 and 2022). She has not won an Olympic medal, which is her focus in 2024.

We wish her a quick recovery from what was described as a minor niggle.

Update Day 1 – Women’s Heptathlon: Katarina Johnson-Thompson

Katarina Johnson-Thompson is withdrawing from the remainder of the heptathlon.

Coach Aston Moore commented:

“Kat has developed a small niggle in her right leg, and in light of the proximity of the Olympic Games, we have chosen to bank what we have learned from this first day of competition and withdraw from the heptathlon.

“We don’t want to risk losing any time from training, which could result if she were to continue competing with it for another day. We wish all the other competitors well for the rest of the competition.”
