Spencer and Astrauskas earn USTFCCCA Great Lakes Regional Awards

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men’s track and field standout Adam Spencer and assistant coach Dave Astrauskas earned USTFCCCA regional honors on Friday following their successful campaigns in the Great Lakes Region.

Spencer was named the USTFCCA Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year following his third-place finish in the 1500 meters at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Melbourne, Australia native also won the Big Ten Championship title in the 800 meters and collected a win at the Australian Athletics Championships in the 1500 meters, winning the Australian national title with a season-best time of 3 minutes, 37.68 seconds. It is his third regional honor after earning Great Lakes All-Region during the 2023 cross country season and Athlete of the Year during his 2024 indoor campaign.

UW’s throws coach for the last 15 years, Astrauskas, was honored as the Great Lakes Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career. Astrauskas coached the Badgers’ throwers to be the only program in the Great Lakes Region with representation in all four throwing events at the NCAA DI West First Round. His leading athlete, Jason Swarens, qualified for his third NCAA Track and Field Championships. Swarens earned First-Team All-American honors with his runner-up performance in the shot put.

Spencer and Astrauskas both received the same accolades for their achievements during the 2024 indoor season after helping UW win the Big Ten indoor crown.
