Hamilton Named Outdoor Men’s Field Scholar Athlete Of The Year

Track & Field Picks Up Slew Of USTFCCCA All-Academic Awards

California track & field’s men’s and women’s squads, as well as eight individual representatives from each, were granted All-Academic honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday. The headliner of Cal’s contingent was 2024 graduate Rowan Hamilton, who was named the USTFCCCA Outdoor Men’s Field Scholar Athlete of the Year – the first Golden Bear in history to win that award.
 
Hamilton, who will represent Canada in the hammer throw at the upcoming Olympic Games, posted a historic campaign in his only season at Cal following his transfer from British Columbia. The USTFCCCA West Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Year and Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Year earned Cal’s first NCAA title in the men’s hammer since 1922 as well as the Bears’ first conference championship in the event since 1919. He ranks No. 4 all time in Canadian history with a PR of 77.18m (253-2), which also ranks as the No. 8 collegiate performance in history and Cal’s program record. Hamilton also owns the Bears’ indoor weight throw record at 22.36m (73-4), which he threw en route to becoming Cal’s first male weight thrower to ever reach the NCAA Indoor Championships.
 
USTFCCCA team All-Academic awards are granted to programs with a combined cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or above. To be eligible for individual honors, student-athletes must possess a cumulative 3.25-or-above GPA and either have finished the indoor season ranked top 48 nationally in at least one event or have participated in either the NCAA Outdoor Regional or National Championships.
