Class of 2024 shine at the English Schools

Innes FitzGerald, Noah Hanson and Aron Gebremariam were among the championship record-breakers in Birmingham on July 12-13

Future Olympians were no doubt in action as the English Schools Track & Field Championships unfolded in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

There were championship records in both senior 3000m races as Innes FitzGerald clocked 8:58.85 as the Devon athlete beat Paula Radcliffe’s 9:04.37 mark from 1992, while Aron Gebremariam of West Midlands ran 8:10.46 to beat the John Nuttall’s mark from 1985.

Sprint hurdles talent Noah Hanson of Essex ran 13.52 (1.1) for a championship record in the senior boys 110m hurdles.

Finlay Powell of Leicestershire and Rutland ran a championship best of 20.80 (2.2) to win the senior boys 200m.

In the inter boys 200m, Sean Appiah broke the longstanding championship best in the heats with 21.32 (1.7) but was runner-up in the final to Farrell Fabusiwa of London who won in 21.48 (1.3).

Divine Iheme of Oxfordshire also impressed in the junior boys 100m with a 10.74 (-1.1) victory after earlier running 10.65 (1.8) in the heats.

Raw talent was on display as Jomiloju Hughes from London broke a 46-year-old championship best in the junior boys triple jump with 14.26m (0.9).

Harrison Stokes of Lancashire, the son of Olympian Stuart Stokes, won the inter boys 1500m steeplechase crown in 4:19.00.

In the junior girls’ 100m, Annabelle Fasuba, the daughter of 2008 world indoor 60m champion Olusoji Fasuba, won in 12.03 (1.6).
