PARIS, France – Former University of Missouri track and field athlete Karissa Schweizer advanced to the 5,000-meter final with a qualifying time of 14:59.64, finishing eighth of 41 athletes on Friday morning.
Schweizer, competing for the United States, will be one of 16 to compete for a medal on Monday, August 5 at 2:15 p.m. CT. She finished just under two seconds behind first place Faith Kipyegon, representing Kenya.
Schweizer became the first Tiger to qualify for the Olympics in multiple women’s events at least twice, competing in the 5,000-meter run and the 10,000-meter run events at both the 2020 and 2024 Games. She is also the second Tiger in women’s program history to compete in the Olympics multiple times, joined by Natasha Kaiser who represented the United States in 1992 and 1996, earning silver medal in the 400-meter relay at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
During her time at Mizzou, Schweizer rewrote the program’s record books. She collected five NCAA titles – the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter run in 2017, the indoor 3,000-meter run and the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter run in 2018. Schweizer was an eight-time All-American, a six-time Southeastern Conference champion and holds Missouri’s women’s record in the mile run (4:27.54), the 3,000-meter run (8:41.60) and the 5,000-meter run (15:71.31).
