PARIS, FRANCE — USC athletes hit the track and field for the first time in Paris today on the eighth day of competition for Trojan Olympians. Two-time Olympian TeeTee Terry started off strong in winning her 100m heat in the opening round to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals in athletics, and Nicole Yeargin helped Great Britain set a national record in the mixed 4x400m relay heats. Meanwhile, in the pool, Australia’s Tilly Kearns scored her first goal in Paris to help the Aussies ensure a spot in the quarterfinals. So, too, did a trio of Trojans — Emily Ausmus, Kaleigh Gilchrist and Amanda Longan — have a hand in Team USA’s third win of group play to secure a quarterfinal slot. Also locking up advancement today was beach volleyball pair Kelly Cheng and Sarah Hughes (USA) and men’s indoor volleyball with Trojan Micah Christenson setting up Team USA for success. Women’s Beach Volleyball
Cheng/Hughes (USA) def. Muller/Tillman (GER) – 2-0
• Two Trojan NCAA champions — two-time Olympian Kelly Cheng and first-time Olympian Sara Hughes — swept their way to their third win in Paris with a 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) victory over Germany’s Muller/Tillman to net some extra momentum entering the upcoming Round of 16.
• Cheng tallied 16 kills, three aces, one block and one dig in the USA pair’s win.
• Hughes had seven digs, seven kills and an ace for Team USA.
Women’s Water Polo
Australia 10, Canada 7
• Playing in her second Olympic Games, current Trojan Tilly Kearns scored her first goal in Paris and added two steals for Australia in its third win of group play.
• First-time Olympian Verica Bakoc scored one goal and had a steal in Canada’s loss to Australia.
• Two-time Olympian and NCAA champion Hayley McKelvey started the game and recorded a rebound for Canada.
USA 17, France 5
• Incoming freshman Emily Ausmus tallied a steal in Team USA’s win over France to finish group play 3-1. The USA will advance to the quarterfinals.
• Playing in her third Olympic Games, alum Kaleigh Gilchrist scored one goal and had a field block for the USA.
