Team USA, Greece Book Spot In Men’s Water Polo Quarterfinals

PARIS – World-record holder Mykolas Alekna registered the top mark in the qualifying round of the men’s discus at the 2024 Summer Olympics on Monday.

Alekna, the No. 1 discus thrower in the world by World Athletics, reeled off a throw of 67.47 meters (221-4) to easily advance to Wednesday’s final. He was one of three men to surpass the auto-qualifying mark of 66.00m (216-6).

Alekna, a two-time Pac-12 champion, set the world record in the discus in April with a throw of 74.35m (243-11) at the Oklahoma Throws Series.  

 

Men’s Water Polo

Adrian Weinberg made nine saves and Johnny Hooper and Luca Cupido each added a goal as the United States defeated Croatia 14-11 to complete Group Play with a record of 3-2. Team USA finished third in Group A and will face Australia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Nikolaos Papanikolaou and Greece also booked a spot in the quarterfinals with a 9-8 victory over Italy. Papanikolaou played just over five minutes in the victory, as Greece scored the go-ahead goal with just under three minutes remaining to secure the win.
