Five Things to Know: No. 13 UW opens season with Badger Classic


MADISON, Wis.— The Wisconsin men’s cross country team begins its 2024 campaign by hosting the Badger Classic on Friday, Sept. 6, at the Zimmer Championship Course. The men’s 6-kilometer race is set to start at 4:40 p.m. and will follow the women’s 6K race at 4 p.m. 

Admission is free for the meet and parking is free at the course.

1. BACK IN ACTION: The Badgers begin their season at the Badger Classic and will face Big Ten foe Illinois at the season-opening meet. Friday”s race is the first of four home meets for the Badgers this season, including the highly regarded Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, Wisconsin Pre-Nationals and the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championships. 

2. DEFENDING THE THRONE: Wisconsin will look to win its seventh consecutive Big Ten title this season and 55th in program history. The Badgers will also try to reclaim the Great Lakes region trophy from the 2023 champion, Butler. 

3. IN THE RANKS: The Badgers open up their campaign ranked No. 3 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Regional rankings. Wisconsin also comes in at No. 13 in the nation and are the top-ranked Big Ten Conference team in the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll. 

4. A DYNAMIC DUO RETURNS:  The Badgers return Bob Liking, a three-time Big Ten Conference Individual Champion, and 2024 Olympian Adam Spencer, who earned first-team All-Big Ten honors a year ago. 

5. LOOKING AHEAD: The Badgers will travel to Savoy, Illinois, for the Fighting Illini Big Ten Preview hosted by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The men will begin racing at 5:45 P.M. at the Orange and Blue Golf Course.
