Pair of Freshman Make Their Collegiate Debut

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. -The California cross country team continued its fall campaign at the Roy Griak Invitational on Friday morning. In their first meet in Minnesota since 2015, five Bears finished in the top 60 of their respective races. The men took ninth and the women 12th overall.

On the men’s side, Carrick Denker and Garrett MacQuiddy were the top two finishers for the Bears for the second meet in a row to start the season. Denker finished with a 25:09.9, which was good for sixth place. MacQuiddy ran a 25:47.0 for 33rd place. 

John Sesteaga finished out the top three spots for Cal, placing 66th with a time of 26:18.

The women had three finish in the top 60 for the Bears. Sophomore Sophie Tau was Cal’s top finisher, claiming 24th place with a time of 22:23.8. Addie Johnson took 50th place for the Bears  with a 22:51.9. Freshman Sabine Kim, who made her collegiate debut at the USF Invitational, finished in 58th place with a time of 23:00.0..

A pair of freshmen who made their collegiate debut Natalie Wang recorded a time of 23:56.0 and Ava Kopec ended in a 24:20.6.

“Today was a mixed bag for the teams but provided us a good stepping stone as we gear for the ACC championships in six weeks,” Cal head coach Bobby Lockhart said. “We have two weeks until we line up at the Dillinger Invitational, so there’s still work to put in to ensure we’re optimal when it counts.”.

The Bears will take another week of racing at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Eugene, Ore. on Oct. 11.
