ACC Student-Athletes Set for NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – A total of 105 ACC student-athletes have qualified to compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held from Wednesday, June 5, through Saturday, June 8, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

The participants in individual and relay events qualified through competition at first-round sites held May 22-25 in Lexington, Kentucky, and Fayetteville, Arkansas. Heptathlon and decathlon participants will compete for the first time at the finals site.

During the regional action, Florida State’s Dajaz DeFrand broke the ACC record in both the women’s 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. DeFrand broke the line in 10.94 seconds to set the new all-time mark in the 100-meter dash, while her 200-meter time of 22.34 seconds also rewrote the league’s record book.

All 15 ACC institutions will be represented by at least one student-athlete at the NCAA Championships. Florida State will lead the conference with 11 student-athletes, while Virginia is right behind with 10. Clemson and Virginia Tech will each be represented by nine student-athletes and at least one relay team, while Notre Dame will send nine individuals to Eugene.

During the 2023 NCAA Championships, the ACC won two gold medals. Notre Dame’s Olivia Markezich won the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:25.03. Virginia Tech’s Julia Fixsen cleared 4.45-meters to win gold in the women’s pole vault. Markezich looks to reclaim her title, entering the championships with the second-fastest time in the country this year, clocking a 9:35.33.
