MSU Cross Country Earns Top 10 Finishes at Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational


EAST LANSING, MICH. – At the ultra-competitive Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, the Michigan State cross country teams both earned top 10 finishes on Saturday at the Burke Golf Course.

“We had a solid day on our men’s side,” MSU Director of Cross Country and Track & Field said. “It was not our best day but still a solid performance and a place to build from. I asked the women’s team to get out aggressively, and it was a hair too much. I feel confident in our team and our future race management as we progress through the season.”

The day started off with the women’s Blue 5k race that was won by No. 1 Northern Arizona with 52 points. BYU’s Lexy Halladay-Lowry won the individual title with a time of 15:57.5. No. 18 Michigan State finished ninth with 300 points.

In her first collegiate race, freshman Rachel Forsyth was the top finisher for the Spartans, ending with the time of 16:45.7. Senior Taylor Ewert finished 60th with a time of 17:04.4. Eleanor Kendall set a new personal best with a time of 17:11.3.

Michigan State had another freshman score in Taylor Pangburn who ran a 17:19.8, while Sarah Forsyth also set a personal best with a time of 17:21.1, as the final Spartan scorer.

In the men’s 8k Blue race, No. 6 Notre Dame won with 55 points, while No. 4 Northern Arizona was second with 68 points. Texas Tech’s Ernest Cheruiyot won the individual race with a time of 22:20.3. The Spartans finished fifth with 167 points.

Andrew Nolan was the top Michigan State runner, finishing 19th with a time of 23:06.8. The was a new personal best for the senior in an 8k race. Riley Hough was 24th with a time of 23:10.9, which was also a new PB. Parker Lambers continued his strong fall with toping his personal best from the Spartan Invitational (23:20.0).

In the women’s Open 5k, Makenna Veen ran unattached and ending seventh with a time of 16:32.2, while Katelyn Stewart-Barnett was ninth with a time of 17:31.3. Madison Osterberg also ran unattached and finished 10th (17:33.8).

Jasper Cane finished 15th in the men’s Open 8k race (24:06.2). Drew Seabase was 18th with a time of 24:17.9.

The Spartans are back in action at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, Oct. 19.
