NC State's Henes Named USTFCCCA National Cross Country Coach of the Year

NEW ORLEANS – NC State women’s cross country head coach Laurie Henes has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, as announced by the organization on Monday.

The honor is the first for a Wolfpack cross country coach according to available information from the USTFCCCA.

Henes led NC State to its first NCAA Championship, and third national title overall, in the 2021 season. Under her guidance, all five scorers at the meet placed in the top 32 individually to garner All-America honors. The five All-Americans set a program record for the most honorees in a single season and was the most by any women’s team in 2021.

A pair of impressive performances at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships and ACC Championships saw the Wolfpack tie the program records for the most single-season All-Region (six) and All-ACC (six) honorees. Under Henes’ guidance, NC State won its sixth-straight ACC team title and its fifth-consecutive Southeast Regional championship. She coached Kelsey Chmiel to the third-year runner’s first career Southeast Regional and ACC individual titles.

Henes was honored as the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year on Monday, Nov. 22. That accolade was the sixth in a row for the NC State women’s coach.
