COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s cross country programs opened 2022 by capturing the team titles at the Mike Baumer Cross Country Classic hosted by Wright State in Fairborn, Ohio, Friday evening. Both the men’s and women’s raced a 5K.

Addie Engel, an NCAA individual qualifier last season, picked up right where she left off, winning the race with a personal-best time of 17:23.5. It was the second year in a row Engel won the first race of the season.

The Buckeye women took six of the Top 7 spots – Daniella Santos was third, followed by Andrea Kuhn, Akemi Von Scherr, Audrey DeSantis and Morgan Schmitt. Santos and Kuhn both ran personal bests, as did Gia Napoleon who placed 19th and Annie Allen who finished one spot behind in 20th.

DeSantis and Schmitt joined freshman classmates Ana Karmol, Samantha Coleman, Sydney Paul, Rose Hoelzel and Aniya Mosely in making their collegiate debuts. Redshirt sophomore Ava Tenaglia also ran in her first cross country race in the Scarlet and Gray.

The Top 5 men all finished in the first 12, led by Kaleb Martin in third. Nathaniel Tamminaga was fourth, Keegan Souhan sixth, Sean Carney eighth and Ivan Slyepkan 12th.

Tamminga, a graduate student, ran his first cross country race for Ohio State and freshmen Souhan and Colby Adams made their collegiate debuts. It was the first collegiate 5K for all of the returnees.
