Bates’ School-Record Run Sets Tone for Wolverines at Silverston Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — BreeAna Bates set a school record in the 60 meters and the University of Michigan women’s track and field team collected numerous top finishes as it hosted the Silverston Invitational, its final home meet of the indoor season, on Friday (Feb. 17) at the U-M Indoor Track Building.

Bates set a new school standard, quickly overtaking her competitors in a riveting event final. She ran 7.36 seconds to break the previous record of 7.37 set by two-time Olympian Cindy Ofili (Sember) in 2016. Bates is now the ninth Michigan athlete to break a school record this season.

Sprinter Ziyah Holman set a meet record in the 200 meters, running 24.14 to win in one of the largest groups of competitors of the day. Her performance was followed up by a career-best from Trinity Henderson in the same event. Henderson ran 24.65 to take second. Meredith Soule and Kennedy Johnson finished 16th and 23rd in the race, respectively.

Michigan also finished strong in the field events with first-place finishes from Gabi Newman and Cate Visscher. Newman cleared 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4.25 inches) to take the event. This was the freshman’s first collegiate win. In the pole vault, Visscher cleared 3.91 meters (12 feet, 10 inches) to win the event, setting a career best. Morgan Flynn took third in the pole vault, clearing 3.51 meters (11 feet, 6.25 inches).

Corinne Jemison led Michigan’s throwers, taking second in the shot put, measuring 15.96 meters (52 feet, 4.5 feet) in her best throw of the event. Pentathletes Theresa Mayanja and Clare McNamara took 12th and 17th in the shot put, respectively. Mayanja threw 11.64 meters (38 feet, 2.25 inches) while McNamara threw 10.41 meters (34 feet, 2 inches).
