Geist Named National and Pac-12 Men’s Athlete of the Week

TUCSON, Ariz. – On Tuesday, Arizona Track and Field’s Jordan Geist was named both the USTFCCCA Men’s National Athlete of the Week and the Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after an impressive performance in his outdoor season debut.

Geist received the honors after breaking the school record in the men’s hammer throw this past weekend at the Island Relays in Freeport, Bahamas. His personal best launch of 73.94m (242-7), which won the event, was not only a school record throw but an NCAA leading throw as well. In fact, that mark is over 2.5 meters greater than the current second-best thrower in the nation. Additionally, Geist’s second (71.04m) and third (70.29m) best throws at the meet also rank third and seventh nationally.

What’s even more impressive is that the hammer throw is Geist’s secondary event. During the indoor season, Geist saw spectacular success in his primary event, the shot put. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, Geist won the event with a throw of 21.15m (69-4.75) and was crowned an NCAA Champion. Coincidentally, he also broke the Arizona school record in the shot put in the first indoor meet of the year, the Lumberjack Team Challenge. Geist was named a First Team All-American in the shot put and an Honorable Mention All-American in the weight throw for the indoor season. Last week, he was also named the USTFCCCA West Region Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for his record-breaking season.

Geist will look to replicate his success this weekend at the Wildcats’ home opener, the Willie Williams Classic. The meet takes place in Tucson at Drachman Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
