Karrie Baloga Runs Down Steeplechase Records With 6:22.85

Three days after winning the Penn Relays 3,000 meters, Karrie Baloga of Cornwall Central NY ran her first 2,000-meter steeplechase of the season at her last race on her home track.
The Colorado-bound runner moved to No. 3 on the all-time list with a 6:28.72 to win the Cornwall Steeplefest on May1.
On Saturday at the 55th Glenn D Loucks Games at White Plains, N.Y., Baloga went to the front and attacked the national record. With two laps remaining, she took a tumble over a barrier. She rolled and got right up and kept chasing the record back on the attack. The mission was to run faster than Angelina Napoleon’s time of 6:24.34 in 2022.
Running hard all the way through the line, Baloga stopped the clock at 6:22.85 for a new national high school record and a new U.S. U20 record. For her effort Baloga was selected the Outstanding Track Performer of the meet.
Behind Baloga, Sheridan Wheeler of Saratoga Springs NY moved to No. 4 on the all-time list with her 6:27.80 runner-up finish
Napoleon, of Allegany-Limestone NY, opted to not run the steeplechase. Instead, she won the mile in a meet record time of 4:46.38. She still has time to come back and lower the steeplechase record again at a later date.
