SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Fighting Illini men’s track and field team completed their first day of action at the NCAA West Preliminaries on Wednesday, May 24. Women will compete on May 25 and 27, men will wrap up competition on May 26. Junior Robert Williams is headed for Friday’s quarterfinals in the 400mH with a new personal-best and program eighth best time, 50.35. He placed second in his heat and fifth overall.

Senior Will O’Brien placed 11th overall with a time of 3:42.35 to qualify for Friday’s quarterfinals. This time moved him up to seventh in the 1500m program record book.  

Graduate student Bret Dannis and Sophomore DeVontae Ford both punched their ticket to the 110mH quarterfinals. Dannis placed third in his heat to grab the automatic spot, 21st overall. Ford took 22nd and trailed Dannis by only .008 seconds, both officially recorded a 13.95.  

Junior Tyler Sudduth placed 13th in the shot put with a throw of 19.28m (63-3 1/4). A heartbreaker as he just narrowly missed the final qualifying spot by an inch.

  • Robert Williams placed fifth in the 400mH and qualified for the quarterfinals (50.35), eighth fastest in school history.
  • Will O’Brien placed 11th in the 1500m and qualified for the quarterfinals (3:42.35), seventh fastest in school history.
  • Bret Dannis finished 21st in the 110mH first round and qualified to the quarterfinals with a 13.95 (13.941).

    • DeVontae Ford finished 22nd and qualified for the quarterfinals with a 13.95 (13.949).

  • Tyler Sudduth placed 13th in the shot put, 19.28m (63-3 1/4).
