Chugiak Girls Go 1-2-3-4 In 400 Finals On The Way To Division 1 Title

It was another dominant performance by the Chugiak girls track and field team Friday and Saturday at the Alaska State Track and Field Championships, held at Palmer High about 40 miles northeast of Anchorage.

Chugiak scored 113 points to defend their Division I team championship.

Led by Skyler Belmear’s first place finish 59.09, Chugiak claimed the top four spots in the 400 to score 28 points in the event. Chugiak swept the distance events as Campbell Peterson defended her 3,200 title on Friday, winning in 11:16.54 and the 1,600 crown on Saturday finishing in 5:10.95.

Teammate Addison Capozzi won the 800 meters for the second consecutive year, in (2:21.29).

The Alaska state meet was also the Olyvia Mamae show. The East Anchorage speedster defended her 100 meters title (12:58), 200 (26.04) and 100 hurdles (15.25).

In boys Division 1, Colony’s Matthew Rongitsch won the 3,200 (9:42.45), 1,600 (4:23.65) and 800 (1:58.33) to lead his team to a state title. Ethan McNulty won the boys discus with 151-10. 

In the field, A’Lante Owens-Player of Bartlett won the triple jump title, soaring 44-2.50 and added a title in the long jump (21-7.50).

Sitka swept the Division 2 titles as both the girls and boys won state titles.

The Sitka girls dominated the distance events scoring 24 points in the 1,600 as Clare Mullin won in 5:21.87. Anna Prussian claimed the 3,200 (12:12.59) and finished second in the 1,600 (5:34.66).

Ada Parker added a title in the triple jump (32-06.50) for Sitka.

Homer’s Seamus McDonough won the 3,200 in 9:28.34 as he edged out Grace Christian’s David Sliwinski (9:29.38). Roles were reversed on Saturday in the 1,600 and 800. Grace Christian’s Robbie Annett defeated McDonough, 4:24.67 to 4:24.83 for the title in the 1,600 and edged out McDonough again in the 800 2:00.53 to 2:00.90.

Truit McCaughey of Nikiski won the shot put (45-6).
